Choosing Your Pick Pattern

There are different pick grips. 1,2,3,4 etc.

1 being not much grip. 4 having a lot more grip.

We want enough grip to go into the ice, not slip, and then come out easily.

We don't want too much grip. Pick may go in to the ice too far and feel stuck.

(This may make it a little difficult to get into rotation right  away)

   So, how do we choose?

   To partially figure this out:

  1) We use the Flip and Lutz jumps to help choose for this part.

These jumps use the majority of the pick cluster from top to bottom.

**Note: ** It could be argued that:

A longer reach would use more the top area of the pick cluster.

A shorter reach would use more of the bottom area of the pick cluster.

**Note: ** This does not affect :

                      A)  Edge jumps, ( Axel, Sal, Loop )

                      B)  Toe Loop ( is included )

                      C)  Spins

This is explained below in the "Blade  Lift"   section.

      So, generally:

Grip 1)  Good for Single Flip and Lutz

Grip 2)  Good for Double Flip and Lutz

Grip 3)  Good for Triple Flip and Lutz

Grip 4)  Good for those skaters that use a lot of speed and force. "Grip 3" may slip for them.

Quad Flip and Lutz may fall into this category.

   2) Body weight and speed can play a part:

Eg: A lighter skater ( Under 100 Lbs, 45 Kg ), with moderate speed  ( Less force on the pick ),

could choose a "Grip 2", and it would work for Triple Flip and Lutz.

There are situations where this type of person in a "Grip 3", may get a little stuck on the take off.

  3)  Technique is also a factor:

Eg: If the skaters upper body is more upright ( Standing straighter ), and  the skater is using a long reach:                The pick can feel like it hammers in harder with more force.  This also may affect the height of the jump.

So, let's say for example may need  more grip... a "Grip 4".

If the skaters upper body is leaning more forward, and the skater is using a shorter reach:( More knee                 bend on the picking leg)

There is less force on the pick. Usually there is a lighter, more springy feel to the jump,  and can even                 be a little higher.

So, lets say for example needs less grip...a "Grip 3".
